It’s so peculiar to me that in an era where body positivity and the Me Too movement are so prevalent, there are still some people uncomfortable with women wearing, acting, and speaking how they want. It saddens me knowing that we still feel the need to put other women down for choices they make with the clothes they want to wear. It’s not just the hostility the mother showed that is saddening, it’s the broader spectrum of things. This is just another contribution to demeaning a women’s choice to do what she wants. In a time where women have to fight to get an abortion, have available birth control and contraceptives, and use their bodies as they please, we should not be demeaning women for their choice to wear leggings. We should be empowering women, encouraging them to be expressive, and most importantly, fighting for their rights to do so. If you’re worried about the “men around and behind who couldn’t help but see their behinds,” then perhaps we should open the conversation open up further to how we should raise our boys into men and how we should encourage them to believe women are equal and allowed to wear what they choose.
